The church was built in 1686, following the discovery on the seashore of a statue of a Madonna that was brought to the small church of St. Paul the Hermit that stood on a rock near the mouth of the Temo River. The then Bishop Sotgia thought of giving a more worthy dwelling to Our Lady who came from the sea and had a new building constructed, dedicating it to St. Maria Stella Maris.
