St. Blaise of Sicci, bishop and martyr, is celebrated on Feb. 3. The date of his martyrdom dates back to 316 AD in Cappadocia, present-day Anatolia. Popular tradition invokes him as a protector against sore throats; in fact, on the feast day, two blessed candles are placed near the necks of the faithful.
