Church of St. Mary of Itria

The 14th-century country church of Santa Maria d’Itria, once suburban, stands on S. Amatore Street in the northern part of the village of Gesico, a short distance from other churches. The building is characterized by a single nave, with presbytery raised one step above the floor of the hall and a semicircular apse. The building, perfectly oriented, is modest in size and Romanesque in style, with no Gothic features except for a few hanging arches on the south side.
It is made entirely of well-squared, medium-sized trachyte and sandstone ashlars left exposed. In the last restoration in the 1990s the side walls were plastered and painted both outside and inside. The facade is tripartite with two pilasters placed on either side of the entrance portal; rebuilt in the upper half with pink trachyte ashlars, it has lost over time the bell gable with which it was equipped; its bronze bell is currently housed in the bell tower of the parish church of Santa Giusta.
The entrance portal, whose lintel bears the date 1305 engraved on it, is surmounted by a semicircular discharge arch. On the sides it has capitals whose outlines are cut flush into the jamb ashlars. The same is found in the side entrances. On the sides of the building it is possible to notice hanging arches, on corbels often figured (architectural elements proper to Romanesque architecture), in which semicircular (sometimes molded), ogival and trefoil profiles alternate. The back has a wide semicircular apse, with a small single lancet window splayed inward to give light to the building, crowned by a series of rounded hanging arches resting
on corbels; also on the back, near the roof, a series of corbels remains as evidence of the now-lost hanging arches. The recently renovated gabled roof is made of wooden frames and a roof covering of brick tiles.
