The church of St. Nicholas of Trullas is one of the most interesting buildings in the entire Sardinian Romanesque landscape.
It was apparently built in the 10th century and then rebuilt in the early 12th century.
The word “trullas,” a Greek-Byzantine term, means dome.
On October 29, 1113, the church was donated to the Camaldolese Order by Petru of Athen and his family.
Of the Camaldolese monastery, destroyed by fire, probably in the first half of the 14th century, in addition to the foundations, a singular and rich document remains: the Condaghe di San Nicola di Trullas.
The interior has a single nave, graced with fine frescoes of a remarkable pictorial and representational level, dating from the first decades of the 13th century.
The glimpses of the paintings, discovered during various archaeological campaigns and restored in 1995, by the Soprintendenza ai Beni Architettonici, per il Paesaggio, il Patrimonio Storico, Artistico ed Etnoantropologico per le Provincie di Sassari e Nuoro, give a glimpse of iconographies that refer to the book of Revelation, with the representation of the celestial hierarchies celebrating the glory of God.
