In the picturesque setting of the Santacaterinese countryside on the slopes of Montiferru is the archaeological site of Columbaris that came to light in excavations carried out in 1955.
It is an early Christian episcopal complex.
Excavations over the decades have unearthed three main buildings attributable to different eras.
Archaeologists have recognized in them two basilicas and a baptistery.
Given the importance and magnificence of the structures, the hypothesis that there was one of the bishoprics of medieval Sardinia in the Columbaris area is now considered credible.
