Defense system of World War II – Caposaldo XI circular anti-tank emplacement

Between 1941 and July 1943, based on an assumed Allied landing in Sardinia, numerous fortifications were built on the island.
Most of these were of the “stronghold” type, a center of resistance composed of several units (housing machine guns or anti-tank guns), mostly distant from the sea on reliefs or along the routes that, from the landing areas, led into the interior of the island, built in strategically useful positions to slow the enemy’s advance while waiting for a counterattack.
They were numbered with Roman characters.
The two casemates here housed respectively a 47/32 anti-tank gun known as an “elephantine” and a machine gun (Breda mod.30, Breda mod.37 or Fiat mod.14/35).
