Domus de Janas of Corongiu and S’Acqua Salida

The necropolis of Corongiu and S’Acqua Salida or Pranu Efis are located a few kilometers away from Pimentel (CA) on the road to Guasila, and are among the most a in Sardinia, dating to the Recent Neolithic, at the time of the Ozieri Culture (3400-2700 BC). The domu of Corongiu with vertical access shaft, antechamber and burial cell is of particular importance because it has interesting motifs consisting of raised graffiti underlined with red substance above and on either side of the entrance hatch. The ornamentation consists of a vertical element, above it laterally branching spirals interpreted as the pattern of a human face; seen in it was the depiction of the Mother Goddess represented as the all-seeing Goddess of Eyes. To her protection were entrusted the dead on their journey to the afterlife made on agile boats, equally depicted above a zig-zag pattern perhaps waves. The funerary area of S’Acqua Salida or Pranu Efis consists of eight tombs, divided into two groups (A and B). Of particular prominence in the complex (A) is tomb No. 1, which consists of a long access corridor, an antechamber, equipped with a hatch with a red ochre-painted frame,a large-
de cell and three small burial chambers. In tomb No. 2 of group A there is a rectangular-shaped chamber whose ceiling has collapsed. On the wall opposite the entrance are painted in red ochre two taurine protomes in a T-shaped pattern bordered by a rectangular box also in red-brown ochre, a color with a propitiatory and regenerative meaning. It is known that the taurine protomes testify to the cult of the male deity, the Taurus God symbol of fertility, companion of the Great Mother guardian of the tomb. In burial group B the tomb takes on the appearance of a house with niches, hatches, seats, ritual hearths as in dwelling huts. The counter was used to lay down objects for worship or as a burial bed, in the hypogea the dead were found lying down or curled up, as if sleeping with red ochre powder beside them, as if to revive them to new life or with axes at their side as a sign of defense.
