In the second half of the 14th century, the castle underwent a substantial strengthening of its defenses, and the 13th-century palace was incorporated into a new defensive route, consisting of a wall and several towers, built with different techniques than the first layout. One of these towers, with a square plan, which had the delicate task of protecting the “Porta Fontana,” has been completely exposed by archaeological excavations, which has defined its 14th-century chronology. An ancient washhouse and perennial water sources that ensured water supply for the Borgo’s population can be visited at that site.
