The so-called Porto Torres furnaces were used for firing iron ore mined at Canaglia, a mine that had been active since the beginning of World War I and closed permanently in the 1960s.
The mined material arrived at the “Roman Bridge” plant via a narrow-gauge railway.
Using a cable car, the product was then sent to the embarkation dock to be finally loaded onto steamships bound for the smelters on the peninsula.
