Military Hospital

The Military Hospital is housed in the Jesuit convent of San Michele.
It was founded in 1837 at the behest of Savoy’s King Charles Albert.
Directed by Colonel Giuseppe Amat of San Filippo, the Military Hospital began its activities in a location that was not the current one; in fact, it was located at the Augustinian convent on Via Sant’Agostino.
That convent was home to the Military Hospital from its establishment until 1848 when, following a deed of gift, the hospital moved to the Jesuit convent of San Michele.
The beginning of the construction of the convent dates to the second half of the 1500s, and precedes that of the church by many years.
With grants financed by the Counts of Sedilo, it was possible to purchase the land and begin work on the building of the Jesuit novitiate house.
In 1595 valuable help came from Monsignor Giovanni Sanna, Bishop of Ampurias, considered the true founder, thanks to whom the construction of the building was completed.
In the facade of the church, on the right, Monsignor Sanna’s coat of arms, an elephant with tusks, can be seen.
The Military Hospital currently covers an area of 6,157 square meters, of which about three thousand are covered.
