Museum of the Lagoon

The Museum of the Lagoon was founded in 1998 thanks to the valuable contribution offered by the Archaeological Superintendence of Cagliari, which has been engaged for years in the scientific investigation of the ancient Punic and Roman deposits in the lagoon.

The exhibition is an initiative of the “Friends of Sardinia Association” in collaboration with the “Santa Gilla Fish Consortium,” the “Service Art Cooperative,” the “Friends of the Lagoon Association” and the “Pertini” Institute of Cagliari.

On display in the rooms are some of the objects recovered from the lagoon, including during recent excavation campaigns and deposited at the “Santa Gilla Fish Consortium” enclosure.

The finds are mainly ceramic artifacts, amphorae and containers from various periods (datable between the 4th century B.C. and the 2nd-3rd century A.D.) used for the preservation and transportation of foodstuffs (meat, wine, oil, grain) and which, thanks to the study of the traces of their respective contents, still present at the time of their discovery, have allowed us to delve into the customs and food traditions of the Phoenicians, Romans and other civilizations that sojourned in these places. In addition, in order to promote a better understanding and enjoyment of the Lagoon Compendium (flora, fauna, traditions related to the lake culture), educational panels were set up.

The museum is located within the “Consorzio Ittico d Santa Gilla,” Km 2.300 state road to Pula, Sa Illetta locality.
