Roman Aqueduct “Solladas”

Near the old “S. Giovanni di Dio” Hospital, between Via Canova and Viale Aldo Moro, some residual piers of the last section of the Olbia aqueduct reappear in the light. On some wall sections can be seen the remains of two pipelines, one of which obliterated by the other. During the excavations carried out in 2003 under the direction of Sanciu in the inner courtyard of the Hospital, four piedritti inserted in the appropriately excavated rock were found, testifying to a modification of the aqueduct route, evidently due to calculation errors in the first design, a modification to be related to the obliteration and subsequent reconstruction of the specus, already noted in Via Canova. The whole area traversed by the aforementioned aqueduct section was an area not yet urbanized at the edge of the marshy area around the city.
