The origin of Schifanoia Palace is placed around 1385. The palace was built on the southern edge of the city. Its role was that of a “delizia,” that is, a private place dedicated to the rest, leisure and entertainment of the House of Este and the court, a space in which to “dodge, or disgust, boredom.” Starting in 1466 it was transformed into one of the most important buildings in Ferrara. A floor, housing the Salone dei Mesi, was added to the main body of the building, and a majestic entrance staircase capable of directly connecting the gardens with the new level was built.
After the 2012 earthquake, the palace underwent a massive construction site for consolidation, architectural and decorative restoration, new staging and lighting.
