St. Anthony Abbot Church

The Church of St. Anthony Abbot was built by the Bishop of Ales Fra Lorenzo da Villa Vincenzo in 1582 and entrusted to the custody of the friars, who abandoned it in 1640, leaving the convent in ruins. The remaining church was renovated and enlarged thanks to the legacies of devotees. The Spanish-style church has a Latin cross plan and is surrounded by a large courtyard and enclosed by a wall. In ancient times, however, the church was surrounded by loggias called “Cumbessias.” The latter were used as shelter for the many pilgrims and housed a thriving market. The church houses a precious Baroque-style wooden altar plated with pure gold inside. In the central niche is a statue of the saint dressed in seven robes of fine workmanship.
