Initially dedicated to St. Catherine, the church was built in its first layout by the Genoese around 1200; it was later enlarged and made a parish church in place of the previous church of St. George (to this day a ruin) to accommodate the growing number of worshippers. Reconstruction work was completed in 1774 with the placement of the valuable polychrome marbles by Giovanni Battista Franco of Como, Andrea Spazzi. The interior of the church has six side chapels facing a single barrel-vaulted nave; the high altar is surmounted by an imposing octagonal dome. Of particular interest are some wooden statues and a silver lamp from the late 1700s.
