The tower of San Giovanni towers over the town of Tharros and is named after the nearby Church of San Giovanni di Sinis. It was built in the late 15th and early 16th centuries, probably during the reign of Philip II. It existed, therefore, before 1590 and was still operational in 1623. It was a “torre de armas” apt for defense accessible, for security reasons, only by a retractable hemp ladder. The tower was manned until 1846.
