(South wall – between the Fortress area and the ramparts 16th century)
The prison on Via Piangipane, composed of several building bodies and divided into different sections (men’s, women’s and juvenile) opened in 1912 to replace the old and now obsolete detention facility housed in the former convent of San Paolo. To ensure security against escape, the building was surrounded by a double wall with a patrol path and sentry boxes.
During the years of fascism it also housed political opponents and many Jews before their deportation.
In 2003, a state law was enacted to establish the National Museum of Italian Judaism and the Shoah, based in the old prisons on Via Piangipane. Initially, the roadside building was opened, after which work began on the winning design of an International Competition to redesign and expand the entire building.
The museum is now open with a permanent collection and one dedicated to temporary exhibitions.[/fusion_text][/one_half][one_half last=”yes” spacing=”yes” center_content=”no” hide_on_mobile=”no” background_color=”” background_image=”” background_repeat=”no-repeat” background_position=”left top” hover_type=”none” link=”” border_position=”all” border_size=”0px” border_color=”” border_style=”” padding=”” margin_top=”” margin_bottom=”” animation_type=”” animation_direction=”” animation_speed=”0.1″ animation_offset=”” class=”” id=””][imageframe lightbox=”yes” gallery_id=”” lightbox_image=”” style_type=”glow” hover_type=”none” bordercolor=”” bordersize=”0px” borderradius=”0″ stylecolor=”” align=”right” link=”” linktarget=”_self” animation_type=”0″ animation_direction=”down” animation_speed=”0.1″ animation_offset=”” hide_on_mobile=”no” class=”” id=””] [/imageframe][/one_half][content_boxes settings_lvl=”parent” layout=”icon-boxed” columns=”2″ icon_align=”left” title_size=”” title_color=”” body_color=”” backgroundcolor=”#f6f6f6″ icon_circle=”yes” icon_circle_radius=”” iconcolor=”#ffffff” circlecolor=”#01416d” circlebordercolor=”#ffffff” circlebordersize=”” outercirclebordercolor=”#ffffff” outercirclebordersize=”2px” icon_size=”” icon_hover_type=”none” hover_accent_color=”” link_type=”” link_area=”” link_target=”” animation_delay=”” animation_offset=”” animation_type=”0″ animation_direction=”left” animation_speed=”0.1″ margin_top=”20px” margin_bottom=”20px” class=”” id=””][content_box title=”Address: ” icon=”fa-compass” backgroundcolor=”#f6f6f6″ iconcolor=”#ffffff” circlecolor=”#01416d” circlebordercolor=”” circlebordersize=”” outercirclebordercolor=”” outercirclebordersize=”” iconrotate=”” iconspin=”no” image=”” image_width=”35″ image_height=”35″ link=”” linktext=”” link_target=”_self” animation_type=”” animation_direction=”” animation_speed=””]Via Piangipane, 81
